ELGIN — The U46 Board of Education voted Monday night to release 178 employees, including 77 teachers, in its annual “reduction in force” process.

That’s the lowest number the Elgin school district has cut in years, according to U46 Chief of Staff Tony Sanders.

Still, U46 Superintendent Jose Torres said, “These are difficult decisions.”

In addition to teachers, Monday’s cuts include two administrators and 99 paraprofessionals, or teacher’s aides.
